As I first opened the door to the vet's office, there was a couple in the waiting area with a cute little dachshund puppy. He was drinking water from a plastic bowl. The room was pretty quiet otherwise.
I sat down in a chair next to the husband. He was quietly staring at nothing. The wife was by the pup, petting his back and ears.
Kenzie looked up at me and began to pull towards the man. She got close enough to jump onto his lap and began to give him kisses.
I quickly apologized and tried to pull her back towards me. I tried to make some small talk with the couple before Kenzie headed back over to the husband.
This time, she laid down on his feet and rolled on her belly. The man seemed quite amused and began to give her belly rubs.
The woman smiled at me and asked if she was a puppy. Kenzie gets that a lot, because she's a ball of pure energy, people assume she's younger than her three years. She smiled again, picked up her pup, and sat down next to her husband.
Moments later she and her husband entered into an exam room. Right before they shut the door, she began to sob uncontrollably.
It hit me. They were there to put down their dog. I felt horrible.
I thought back to when we first walked into the waiting area and began to put the pieces together.
I don't know how to describe what I felt when I realized that Kenzie sensed something was wrong.
She's usually shy around strangers, so for her to run over to the husband and give him kisses and comfort...simply amazing.
Kenzie is a smart dog. She can trick us into a situation that ends up with her stealing food off our dinner plate. She rings a bell when she has to go to the bathroom. She knows where the treats are and refused to take medicine without a clump of cheese being served.
Dogs are smart. Some folks might suggest that I'm projecting or making a mountain out of a mole hill.
I don't know why she did it. Maybe she sensed something was wrong or maybe the husband had some leftover BBQ sauce on his face.
Whatever the reason, it made my heart warm. It was awesome.
