Lima Time

Originally posted 5/26/10 - From TH-413.

I know this site is supposed to be about all the things that go on in TH-413, but I think I need to break from the humor for a moment and talk about something that's been eating at me lately.

Jose Lima.

For those of you who don't know, (or who may not be into the baseball cult that followed a sweet singing, semi-sane, right handed power pitcher that carried the same last name as myself) Jose Lima pitched in the major leagues for five different teams (Tigers, Astros, Royals, Dodgers, Mets) and had a relatively ho-hum career (13 seasons, 89-102, 5.26 ERA, 980 K).

Needless to say, if my brother or I ever played in the majors, Jose would not have been the best player with the last name Lima to wear a professional baseball uniform.

Jose was known more for his antics on the mound (sang to himself, danced, etc) than he was for his career on the mound (although he was a 21 game winner for the '99 Astros).

I had the pleasure of meeting Jose Lima when he was on the Astros, he came to NY and I happened to be a lucky fan who was in the front row, near the Astros dugout during Batting Practice.

Jose came up to my brother and I and started chatting away, when I told him we had something in common; the same last name.

Jose lit up light a Christmas tree, like he had found a long lost relative. He was super excited and kept asking me what island I was from "The DR? Puerto Rico? Cuba?"

When I told him I was actually from an island called Sicily, he rubbed his forehead in confusion; "I don't think I'm familiar with that island," he said.

RIP Jose, you made me a life long fan that day, and your spirit will be missed.
